Roads and Bridges are the arteries of the Nation and the backbone of the economy. India's 3.34 million kilometers long road network is the second largest in the world. This road network carries nearly 65% of freight and 85% of passenger traffic. The total length of National Highways in the country at present is only 2 percent of the total road network, but carries over 40 per cent of the total traffic. In order to give a boost to the economic development of the country, the Government had embarked upon a massive National Highways Development Project, under this about 14,279 km length of National Highways are proposed to be upgraded to 4 or 6 lane at a total estimated cost of Rs. 6,46,390 million. The government is also improving road connectivity to major ports in India at an estimated cost of Rs.40,000 million. There are several other programs both at the National & State level which are being implemented to improve the network of roads in India.

There are more than half million major & minor bridges in the road and railway network, with more than 40% of those being 80 years old and for many of them the foundation drawings are also not available. Number of these bridges require continuous monitoring and rehabilitation as the axle loads and number of vehicles have increased substantially.
